Dear Rushee,

Going to college can be quite intimidating. Transitioning from the comforts of your hometown, where friendships were often a product of proximity, to a huge campus with over 40,000 potential friends, can be overwhelming. The challenge lies in finding your people. Even as a student-athlete at Penn State, where my teammates made the university feel smaller, I yearned for a community beyond athletics—one filled with motivated, enthusiastic, and like-minded individuals.

As a finance major, I spent countless hours in the Business Building, surrounded by familiar faces from class, yet feeling disconnected. That changed when I heard about AKPsi through friends from other schools. Attending the Business Fraternity Council (BFC) Mixer proved to be a pivotal moment. Little did I know, the following weeks would introduce me to some of my closest friends. Conversations with AKPsi brothers revealed not only genuine friendships but also a wealth of experiences and opportunities within the fraternity.

Throughout rush week, I learned more about what AKPsi had to offer—both professionally and philanthropically. The prospect of being part of such a robust, well-rounded, and close-knit community made me eager to join. Every conversation during rush week was unique, yet each brother shared a common thread—an unwavering dedication to AKPsi.

In the following months, I experienced profound growth, not just professionally and philanthropically, but on a personal level as well. AKPsi and every brother played a pivotal role in my development, providing unwavering support and fostering confidence in my pursuits. Beyond the transformative journey, the fraternity gifted me enduring friendships with 27 individuals who hailed from diverse backgrounds and harbored incredible successes.

Rushing may seem intimidating, but the brothers are extremely welcoming and genuinely invested in helping you find your place. With only four years at Penn State, maximizing your time and surrounding yourself with compassionate, energetic, and ambitious individuals is so important. AKPsi challenged me, pushing me beyond my comfort zone to excel in any situation I am put in. These incredible people inspire me to better myself daily, and I aspire to give back to AKPsi as much as it has given me.

I sincerely hope you decide to rush AKPsi. This community has not only changed my life but continues to amaze me every day. I can confidently say that AKPsi will make your time at Penn State the best years of your life.

Best,
Allison Spalding

FAQs

  • No! Although many of our brothers are business majors, we are one of the only business fraternities that are open to other majors. If you are curious, we can likely connect you with a brother with a similar major during rush week!

  • Yes! We commonly find people rushing more than once. Please do not be discouraged if you do not get a bid your first time. We do give out bids to students who have rushed more than once. Candidates who come back to rush again show a high level of interest and commitment to our fraternity and that is great!

  • Business professional for men would be a suit and tie with dress shoes. For women, this would be a dress and blazer or dress pants, a dress shirt, and a blazer with dress flats or heels. Business casual for men would be dress pants, no tie, and optional blazer with dress shoes. For women, we suggest a knee-length or longer dress that also covers your shoulders. You could also wear dress pants with a dress shirt with flats or heels. For the casual events, please feel free to wear whatever you are comfortable in.

  • Rush Week is commonly associated with greek life as a week of events to get to know potential members. While business fraternities are not a part of greek life (although we do use greek letters), all five of us use this rush process. The BFC Mixer is an opportunity to meet all of the business fraternities. The following week, each business fraternity will host around 4-5 events for interested students to get to know them and vice versa. While we can't speak to what the other business fraternities do, we personally are looking to find driven individuals who exemplify the traits of our fraternity. Some events are more "professional", but we do want to see you have fun and relax at some of our other events as well. We are really just trying to get to know you and for you to get to know us. Have fun, and don't be nervous!

  • Have fun and be yourself! We want to get to know YOU and for you to really get to know us! It's important for you to evaluate us as well. It's important for the fraternity to be something that you feel passionately about, too, because if you receive a bid, the pledging process is very involved.

  • Pledging takes up about the same amount of time as adding a 3-4 credit class to your schedule. However, this work is completely different from work you would be doing in the classroom. Everything that we teach and do all has a purpose. You feel more confident and prepared for success afterwards. On top of that, those whom you pledge with will quickly become your closest friends - ask any brother!

  • Come prepared! This is most important. Bring 4 copies of your resume, get enough sleep, and dress appropriately for a professional interview. As far as the questions you will be asked, practice some basic behavioral questions - you should be able to find lots online! If selected to move forward with the interview process, we will send you more detailed tips and advice so you can feel more prepared!

  • A bid is an invitation to participate in the pledge process in preparation to joining our fraternity. These bids are given out after rush week is complete. We do have private rush events, meaning that you have to be selected to continue with the rush process. If you are not selected for that, unfortunately that is the end of the rush process and you will not be receiving a bid. If selected to continue, you will be asked to attend our private events and complete a professional interview. After the interview, you will know by the end of that week whether or not you received a bid.
