Spotlighting Brother Erin Roney
Sophomore | Integrated Sciences, B.S. + Accelerated Master’s Program
Coming out of high school, I knew I wanted to take every opportunity to get involved, but choosing from the hundreds of clubs at Penn State quickly became daunting. As an out-of-state student who didn’t know anyone in Pennsylvania, I felt increasingly nervous about finding my place and becoming part of a community on campus. I worried about whether I would find “my people” and a club that would truly help me grow into the best version of myself.
During my first fall semester, I took a leap and tried many new activities in hopes of discovering a community where I belonged. Despite my efforts, none of them felt like home, and I struggled to find a group that aligned with my goals. That semester, I started hearing about the many opportunities within a business fraternity. Since I’m studying science with aspirations of earning an MBA, this seemed like a promising path to help me reach my long-term career goals.
What truly drew me in, however, was hearing about the experience from a friend who rushed and joined in the fall. She described AKPsi not only as a place that supports your ambitions but also as a community of lifelong friends—people dedicated to giving back, lifting each other up, and supporting one another through both short-term challenges and long-term aspirations. Hearing the positive impact it had on others inspired me to give it a chance.
Little did I know, this was exactly the group I had been searching for since stepping on campus as a freshman last fall. Rushing AKPsi brought together everything I was passionate about: service, leadership, friendship, and community, all in one place. Throughout the rushing process this past spring, I discovered who I truly want to be, and for the first time, I felt like I could fully be myself while growing into the best version of me.
