Spotlighting Brother Joy Lu

Sophomore | Mechanical Engineering B.S.

Dear Rushee,

Entering college is an exciting but overwhelming experience. You’re presented with countless opportunities, often without a clear sense of direction and only the understanding that somewhere along the way, you need to find your people. As a mechanical engineering major, I tried to do exactly that by getting involved wherever I could. I joined a sorority to become a part of Greek life and participated in engineering clubs to surround myself with others in my major. While these experiences brought me meaningful friendships, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was still missing. I was searching for a community that felt truly close-knit and one that would support me and push me to grow.

I had heard about AKPsi through friends, but I was hesitant. I never pictured myself in a business fraternity, and I especially didn’t think it was something I could pursue as an engineering major. It felt intimidating and outside my comfort zone. Still, I chose to take a chance and attend rush events, and from my very first conversations, I realized how wrong my assumptions had been.

Speaking with the brothers during rush, I was immediately struck by how genuine and intentional every interaction felt. They listened closely, valued my perspective, and made me feel welcomed regardless of my background or major. What stood out most to me was the diversity of the brotherhood. The brotherhood is made of people from so many different majors, experiences, and paths, each bringing their own strengths and talents to the community. Everyone has something to offer, and everyone can find a place here.

Since joining AKPsi, I’ve grown immensely both professionally and personally. I’m constantly learning from those around me, feeling supported in my career and personal goals, and encouraged to push beyond my limits. Being surrounded by individuals who inspire and challenge me has made a lasting impact on who I am becoming. Beyond that, these people have become some of my closest friends, making every experience both meaningful and fun.

If I could offer one piece of advice as you consider rushing, it would be this: be your authentic self. Don’t focus on trying to impress anyone or fit a certain mold. AKPsi values authenticity above all else. Rushing can be intimidating, but trust the process, lean into the conversations, and allow yourself to fully experience the moment.

Rushing AKPsi has been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve made in college. I will forever be grateful for the community, growth, opportunities, and friendships it has brought into my life. I encourage you to take the leap, step outside your comfort zone, and find your people here, just as I did.

Best,

Joy Lu
